What Does a Counselling Session Actually Look Like?

If you've ever thought about going to counselling, you've probably wondered, "What actually happens in a session?" This is a completely normal question, and one that can be accompanied by curiosity, uncertainty, and sometimes a bit of nerves. And the thought of opening up to a stranger can be daunting, but this blog will walk you through what to expect to feel more informed and at ease before taking that first step.

Your first counselling session is less about “fixing” anything and more about getting to know you. We’ll typically start with a conversation about what brought you to counselling. You’re welcome to share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. There’s no pressure to open up all at once - it is your space, and you set the pace. You may also be asked some general questions about your background, current challenges, and what you hope to get out of counselling. This helps create a clearer picture of your needs and allows us to work together more effectively. Importantly, the first session is also your opportunity to get a feel for me as a counsellor. A strong, trusting relationship is key to meaningful progress, so it’s important that you feel comfortable and supported.

Counselling sessions are conversations, but they're guided with intention and care. Each session is tailored to you and your needs. We might explore your thoughts, emotions, patterns, relationships, or past experiences. Sometimes we’ll focus on a specific issue; other times the session may unfold more organically, depending on what feels most present for you that day. There’s no “right” way to do counselling. You don’t need to prepare anything in advance or have the perfect words. Showing up as you are is more than enough.

Here are a few things you can expect from counselling:

  • A safe, non-judgmental space where you can speak freely

  • Confidentiality - what you share stays private (with a few important legal exceptions, which will be explained to you)

  • Support and guidance, not advice or quick fixes

  • Honest, compassionate reflection to help you gain insight and clarity

You might leave some sessions feeling lighter and more understood. Others may feel more challenging and draining, and that’s okay too. Growth often comes from gently working through difficult emotions.

Confidentiality is a cornerstone of counselling. Everything you share in sessions is kept private and treated with the utmost respect. There are a few exceptions, such as if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, or in certain legal situations, but these will always be discussed with you clearly from the start. The goal is to create a space where you feel safe enough to be open, without fear of judgment or exposure.

Counselling can take place either in person or online, and both are effective depending on your needs and lifestyle. In-person counselling allows for a calm and supportive space where you can connect face-to-face and feel truly heard. Sessions take place in Newlands, in a private and comfortable setting, allowing you to slow down and explore your thoughts and emotions. Meeting in person helps build a sense of trust and connection, making it easy to express yourself and engage fully in the counselling process. Online counselling offers a safe and accessible way to receive professional support. Sessions are held via a secure online platform, allowing you to connect from any familiar and comfortable private space. It's a simple and convenient way to prioritise your mental health and wellbeing in a fast-paced world.

Starting counselling can feel like a big step, and it is. But it’s also a meaningful one.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin. Counselling is a space where you can explore, reflect, and grow at your own pace, with support along the way.

If you’ve been considering reaching out, this is your reminder that it’s okay to be unsure, and it’s okay to begin anyway.

If you have any questions or would like to book a session, feel free to get in touch. You’re always welcome here.
