Registered Counsellors are psychological professionals registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and are trained to provide short-term, preventative, and supportive mental health services. Our work focuses on enhancing the psychosocial well-being of individuals, families, and communities through accessible support. With only a small portion of the population having access to mental health services, Registered Counsellors help bridge the gap by offering more affordable, community-based, and culturally informed services.
We are often the first point of contact for people experiencing emotional, behavioural, or psychosocial difficulties. Our goal is to offer early intervention before challenges develop into more severe mental health conditions. This includes providing short-term counselling, psychoeducation, screening assessments, and implementing structured community programmes. When we identify concerns that fall outside our scope, we refer clients other practitioners. Importantly, we do not diagnose mental disorders or prescribe medication - this is one of the main distinctions between us and other mental health professionals.
Registered Counsellors work in a wide range of settings, including schools, NGOs, community centres, private practices, workplaces, and public healthcare environments. Many work with children, adolescents, and young adults; groups that make up a large portion of South Africa’s population and are often most in need of early mental health intervention.
Overall, Registered Counsellors play an indispensable role in South Africa’s mental health ecosystem. By working collaboratively with psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and other professionals, we help ensure that individuals receive holistic, appropriate, and more affordable mental health support.
